Recycling the Waste

The Conservative Green Agenda for Cirencester

Every item kept out of landfill saves the taxpayer money and contributes to the environment

Our Success is all Down to You

Thanks to you the Cotswolds has become one of the best authorities in the UK and Europe at recycling and composting waste.

In the first 8 weeks of the new service the amount of waste going to landfill was reduced from 3,400 tonnes to just 1,258 tonnes.

Landfill tax is currently 32 pounds per tonne so this represents a big saving for the council taxpayer. In addition, CDC receives 44.74 pounds per tonne in recycling credits from the County Council for every tonne of waste that gets recycled.

Organic waste, which goes for composting, amounted to 2,387 tonnes and recyclables - paper, cans, cardboard etc. - reached 1,134 tonnes.

Despite concerns, fly tipping has not increased and there has been no increase in the amount of landfill waste being taken by residents to the Household Recycling Centre at Fosse Crosse.

The Conservatives have turned around the recycling record at Cotswold District Council.

The recycling rate has increased from a modest 17% under the former Council reaching over 60% under the Tories.

Where Does the Waste go - latest figures

Fantastic results from the Conservative green agenda.

We have been working hard at this for over 3 years and knew that it would be difficult to convince some sceptics. Yes there have been teething troubles as we predicted - but the results, we believe, speak for themselves.

In the first year, 2006/7, a total of 15,822 tonnes of waste was recycled or composted and kept out of landfill - 40.9% of the total collected.

By 2007/8, in part due to increases in garden waste, recycling rates topped 50% for the first time.

In 2008/9 under the new waste service, recycling and composting rates averaged 62% peaking at over 70% - the best results in the country and now the best in Europe according to industry figures.

What was believed to be very ambitious targets for recycling within 3 years have been well and truly surpassed.

It could not have been done without your help and co-operation. A fantastic response from local residents.
