Cirencester Conservatives Working for the Community

Tory Landslide

The Conservatives pulled off a spectacular victory in elections to Cotswold District Council on May 3rd 2007.

Seven of the ten Cirencester seats fell to the Tories on an improved turnout, all but wiping out what was seen as a Liberal Democrat stronghold.

Overall the Conservatives scored successes in 38 out of 44 CDC seats.

CDC Leader, Lynden Stowe said - the electorate has given us a clear mandate to carry forward our programme of improvements to services. Our record of low council tax increases and recycling results way above government targets show that we can deliver on our promises and that we have the ideas and determination to make the Cotswolds a safer, cleaner and greener place to live and to work.

Noses in the Trough

At a meeting of Gloucestershire County Council in July 2008, two Cirencester Liberal Democrat Councillors attempted to line their own pockets at the expense of Council Taxpayers by voting in favour of introducing pensions for Councillors.

Fortunately you will not be faced with this cost - the move was defeated by the Conservatives

Temporary Home for Cirencester Library

Arrangements for Cirencester Library to move to Chesterton School for the whole of 2008 were squashed following the intervention of Councillor John Burgess.

Acting on complaints from members of the public, John investigated and found that plans were well advanced for the move and that this had the full backing of the Cirencester Liberal Democrat County Councillors.

John spoke to the Property Services Managers of the County and District Councils and persuaded them to re-examine the decision and consider a location closer to the town centre.

The Library, which would otherwise have been out of reach for many local customers, including mothers and children visiting the children's section, was given a temporary home in Beeches Road, Cirencester whilst the Library was completely refurbished by Conservative run Gloucestershire County Council.

Blazing Row at CDC

You would be forgiven for thinking that headlines in the local papers about a row echoing up and down the corridors of power at CDC was between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.

In fact it was between the Lib Dems, other Lib Dems and Independent Councillors after a Lib Dem scheme to make political capital over the waste and recycling issue had fallen flat on its face.
